Asus Zenfone 5Z review seems to be the head of our discussion today since it’s the latest device. When Asus announced the Zenfone 5 range at MWC, all eyes turned to the group’s king, the 5Z. Nearly six months later, the phone is finally available for only $ 500 in the United States. While Samsung dominates Android’s leading market, there is room for a strange compromise between top-level devices and budget. This “affordable flagship” space is heavily populated with OnePlus, Honor and Xiaomi offerings, but Asus has set its sights on a piece of this cake with the Asus Zenfone 5Z review.
Frankly, this is the best phone of the Taiwanese company to date, high-end sports hardware, a solid camera and a design inspired by the iPhone X. It’s very fast, powerful and operator-run. However, as you are expecting it, let me say this; as great as it is is not enough. Compared to the OnePlus 6, one of the best Android devices launched this year in terms of value, the offer of ASUS is very short. Although it costs $ 30 less, it has other features – including software – that make it fall.
The Design of Asus Zenfone 5Z
Like most high-end ASUS Smartphones, the Zenfone 5Z is impressive. The glass with a slight pattern of concentric circles seems rad. There is an aerospace aluminum metal structure between the 2.5D glass at the front and back.
Apart from looking good, it’s construction and building also looks attractive.
With just 155 grams, the Zenfone 5Z is lightweight, with a gentle weight distribution along the entire length of the device. It’s a great feeling to keep it, really, in spite of its flexibility.
Unfortunately, the entire glass design makes the Smartphone a wet magnet. Of course, this is long overdue.
The phone has a large 19: 9 screen and the slit of the glass panels is transparent. Asus managed to keep the appearance of the camera in the back to a minimum.
Overall, the Asus Zenfone 5Z features an exceptional design with an attractive glass background. There is no IP rating, so neither watches out for bad weather.
The Display of the Device
The Asus Zenfone 5Z features a large 6.2-inch Full HD + IPS LCD screen with a 19:9 aspect ratios and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens for protection. It also has a notch.
The display is quite clear and the viewing angles are very good. It has a good LCD screen calibration and the images and text are sharp even outdoors.
The Zenfone 5Z probably has one of the best LCD screens on an Android Smartphone, mainly in this segment. The blacks are deep enough and the colors burst. You can change the wide gradient to the standard mode or customize it to your liking, but recommend leaving it as it is. The wide color gamut mode is rather striking.
Asus uses the color temperature sensor on the Zenfone 5Z’s camera to adjust the display according to ambient lighting conditions, which works perfectly.
The Asus Zenfone 5Z incorporates a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor and is available in 3 memory types, with 6 GB of RAM and 64GB or 128GB of internal storage, and 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage.
The Asus Zenfone 5Z will go through almost anything. There is no delay or stuttering while playing graphics-intensive games.
The AI Boost option also helps you if you need a sudden boost by allocating more resources to a game or important resources. OptiFlex technology is another AI-based feature that allows you to open your frequently used applications faster.
The battery is another area where Asus performs a good and an interesting work. The phone has many battery performance modes, normal, power-saving and Super Saver. It also has an option to customize its settings which allow you to choose how you want to optimize battery consumption. There is also a unique feature that notifies you about the status of the battery throughout its life cycle, probably a jab about Apple’s battery problems.
The 18W charger provided by the Zenfone 5Z takes more than one-half hour to charge the phone’s 3300 mAh battery from 0 to 100%. In everyday use, AI charging technology does not completely charge the phone at one time to avoid charging pressure. Charge the phone at night can reach 80% quickly, then the charge of maintenance, to reach 100% upon waking. Asus’s claims to avoid fast charging all the time will improve the health of the battery.
The life of the battery, with the normal mode, is very good and even with a fairly active use, I had about 20% at the end of the day.
- It features a hybrid SIM tray. This is open to either double Nano or single SIM card and a microSD card of 2TB in case you need more storage.
- One of the important features of the Zenfone 5Z hardware is its stereo speaker setup. The speaker can get really loud. Switching it to the Outdoor Mode will decrease the bass to raise the volume more.
- Also, two NXP amps which offer a quality aural experience for headphones plugged into the 3.5mm audio jack are present.
- The device of Zenfone 5Z also supports aptX HD for the super Bluetooth audio experience.
- Dual speaker configuration on this particular device of Zenfone offers rich stereo sound. This, together with the device audio internal will impress most audiophiles.
- Zenfone 5Z also comes with a USB Type-A to Type-C cable and a pair of Hi-Res-certified in-ear headphones.
In terms of camera, the Asus Zenfone 5Z features a dual camera setup with a 12-pixel, primary camera, and a secondary 8-pixel wide-angle camera. The primary camera of this device has a f/1.8 aperture with face recognition autofocus.
The camera focuses speedily and gets the coverage just right in good light conditions. The photos capture great and look beautiful with quality color accuracy. The photograph looks good while the edge uncovering is mostly wonderful. The AI scene feature switches to Night View mode when it’s night. This will reduce the speed of the shutter.
One of its best features is the availability of options like AI Photo Learning and AI Scene detection. The AI Scene detection lashes out when framing an image and the device detects certain scenes, as well as changing the camera setup accordingly. On other hands, AI Photo Learning suggests options like editing, learning about your favorites as you are applying or rejecting those edits.
The front camera of the Zenfone 5Z manages various prepossessing and sharp selfies with immense color reproduction. In low light conditions, you can make your device’s screen flash to light up your face and will never bright too much to blow out your face.
With its camera, you may record videos at 4K with 60fps with EIS toward keeping everything stable.
Zenfone 5Z Smartphone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo with its proprietary UI layer – ZenUI – on top. Asus has a well-brought-up record of Android version updates; however, the company hasn’t shared its timeline for the Android Pie update for the Zenfone 5Z Smartphone. With the Zenfone 5Z, Asus pitches several AI-powered features by regarding many of them as “AI”. One of its distinctive features is the AI charging. An AI Ringtone feature which sets the ringtone volume using the microphone is also present.
One of the problems Zenfone 5Z facing is its gesture navigation lack. Once you adapt to gestures, you’ll find it difficult to go back to capacitive buttons for traditional navigation. ZenMotion in other hands, allow interaction with the phone via gestures.
Is there any alternative?
The answer to the above question is YES. Asus Zenfone 5Z has competitors like OnePlus 6 which have OLED screen feature. OnePlus 6 also offer a higher level of polish, with only 30 USD. Let’s take a look at Nokia 6.1 and Moto G6, which can get for less than 300USD.
How Long Will Asus Zenfone 5Z Last?
Asus promise to upgrade this device OS to the minimum of Android 9.0 Pie, however, no one can tell how long will the process take. The phone wraps in a glass, for the purpose of ensuring protection, though, no IP-rated water resistance.
